About New Moon Orion

New Moon Orion placed 1st Male Foal in the Open section on the Trakehners Australia National Assessment Tour 2017, and scored  equal 3rd overall out of 52 horses from all classes on the tour (predominantly Trakehner and Holsteiner breeds).  International judge Matthias Werner noted that he has a correct and long-legged foundation, with a well-grown body, long-legged and athletic movements out of a strong and well-muscled hindquarter.  A modern kind of sporthorse.

NM Orion’s sire is Olymp al Samarra, a Shagya-Araber stallion standing at stud in Germany and needing little introduction on the endurance scene there.  Olymp has been approved in three separate stallion performance tests, including competing against warmblood breeds in the Sport Performance Test with outstanding results (he won the dressage component against 30 warmblood stallions).  He is also a champion endurance horse, achieving one of the highest results in his endurance performance test in the last 15 years.  He has a long career of competing for Germany on the International stage.  He has been selected to represent Germany in the European Endurance Championships on several occasions, including selection for the Junior team in 2016.  Olymp’s progeny are successfully competing and winning at prominent endurance events across Europe.

NM Orion’s dam is the purebred Arabian mare Sashenka LEA (by Adras).  Sashenka LEA boasts a wonderful pedigree of Russian and Polish racing lines, and is a grand-daughter of the famous Vnuchka, an International flat race winning mare purchased from Tersk stud for US$130K in 1988.  Sashenka Lea’s sire Adras was time-trialed in flat racing as a 3yo over 800m and 1200m, with times matching the thoroughbreds in training at the same track.  Adras progeny are recognised for carrying speed, height, and the temperament for elite competition.  Sashenka LEA was approved for Trakehner breeding in 2016 and is listed in studbook 1 of the German Trakhener Verband.

Sashenka LEA was started under saddle in mid-2017.  She won her HARC maiden sprint over 1150m in Merton, Victoria in October 2017, then moved across into endurance training, to become qualified for open competition under AERA National rules in early 2019.  In July 2019 she successfully completed the 160km Tom Quilty Gold Cup National Championship held in Queensland, placing 47th out of 135 starters in the Middleweight division.  She has since been exported to the UAE.

NM Orion was started under saddle as a 4yo, but shortly afterwards had a paddock accident which prevented a public career.

NM Orion has sired two beautiful, strong foals at New-Moon Stud, both with exceptional trainability and character:

New-Moon Odin, our young upcoming stallion.  New-Moon Odin was awarded Elite status by International assessor Frank Weisskirchen when shown as a foal on the Australian All Breeds Tour in 2020.  Following the 2020 Tour, Frank Weisskirchen awarded New-Moon Stud the special assessor award for Best Breeding Program on Tour!  NM Odin has a Preliminary Stallion License through ACE Group Inc (Australian Continental Equestrian Group), pending his performance and jump testing scheduled for February 2024.

New-Moon Maia is a gorgeous filly who has not yet been shown (due to covid tour cancellations).  She was started under saddle in 2023 and was exceptionally easy to educate.  She is being bred this season to allow more time to mature physically before continuing her ridden education.
